Chad Sets December 29 for Elections at All Levels
Chad’s National Election Management Agency (ANGE) has scheduled legislative, provincial, and municipal elections for December 29, 2024. ANN President Ahmed Barticheret announced the dates on August 21, stating that nominations will be accepted from October 19 to 28, with final results due by February 3, 2025.
The election timeline follows the recent passage of a new organic law defining Parliament’s structure. Barticheret noted that the existing electoral register will be used due to time constraints and resource limitations.
The ruling MPS party, led by Mahamat Zen Bada, is ready for the elections, emphasizing adherence to the transitional period ending in 2024 and a return to constitutional order.
In contrast, opposition leader Pastor Moyadé Narédoum of the ADIL party criticized the schedule as hasty and potentially detrimental to peace. Civil society groups, including Jean Bosco Manga, argue that the elections should address unresolved boundary issues first.
The political party “Les Transformateurs,” led by Succès Masra, is gearing up for a September convention to plan for the elections. Additionally, organizations like the Civil Society Collective Against Injustice and Inequality and the Political Actors Consultation Group (GCAP) are campaigning against the new organic law.
