The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources generated approximately Le163 million in revenue in 2025, following a revision of fishing-related fees across the industrial and artisanal sectors, the government announced on Tuesday.

The disclosure was made by the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, during the government’s weekly press briefing at the Miatta Civic Centre in Freetown.

Minister Dugba said the revenue increase resulted largely from adjustments to licensing and operational fees, with a particular focus on the artisanal fishing sector. She noted that the annual fee for artisanal fishermen was raised from Le1,000 to Le3,000, a measure aimed at improving sector regulation and boosting state revenue.

The minister also highlighted the enforcement of the close season policy, which temporarily restricts fishing activities to allow fish stocks to replenish. According to her, the policy is designed to promote sustainability and avert long-term shortages in the country’s fish supply.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, she added, remains committed to balancing revenue generation with conservation measures to protect marine resources while supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities nationwide.
