Kwame Kari-Kari Fact-Checking Fellowship starts tomorrow

To tackle the rampant spread of misinformation and disinformation, the Kwame Kari-Kari Fact Checking Fellowship is set to start on March 1st. The fellowship which has selected journalists from different countries including three from Sierra Leone, will see journalists work on stories to correct misinformation.

The fellowship will run from March to August ending this year, creating a very thorough learning process for those involved.

This initiative stems from the urgent need to promote media literacy and equip journalists with the essential tools to combat the proliferation of false information.

Scheduled to kick off on March 1 and conclude on August 30, 2024, the Kwame Karikari 2024 Fellowship aims to empower journalists to effectively navigate the intricate web of misinformation. With a focus on providing participants with invaluable skills and resources, the fellowship endeavors to confront political, social, and cultural misinformation prevalent in the region.

Temilade ONILEDE, Programme Officer at Dubawa Nigeria, emphasized that a majority of the fellowship sessions will be conducted virtually, ensuring accessibility and reach across diverse geographical locations.

Led by seasoned facilitators boasting years of experience in journalism, the fellowship promises rigorous training sessions covering a spectrum of topics. These include fact-checking methodologies, accountability journalism, the media’s role in West Africa, understanding the information disorder ecosystem, investigative journalism techniques, and the ethical responsibilities of journalists in combating misinformation.

The 2024 DUBAWA Kwame Karikari Fact-Checking Fellowship Training represents a collaborative effort to bolster media literacy and maintain the integrity of information dissemination. By arming journalists with the requisite skills and knowledge, the fellowship aims to cultivate a more informed society resilient to the dangers posed by misinformation.
