Ministry of Planning Announces NGO Week 2026 Celebration

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has on the 19 February, 2026 announced plans for the celebration of NGO Week 2026 during a press conference held in Freetown.
The Ministry, which oversees Sierra Leone’s economic policies and development planning, said the annual event is aimed at recognizing the contributions of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) toward national development.
Speaking at the press briefing, Christian Kamara, Chairman of the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations Board, said NGO Week highlights the work of both International NGOs (INGOs) and National NGOs (NNGOs) across the country. He noted that the celebration will also align with global observances showcasing the impact of NGOs worldwide.

Kamara emphasized that NGOs continue to play a critical role in supporting rural communities facing challenges, adding that this year’s activities will spotlight achievements in key development sectors.
Also addressing journalists, James Riak, Steering Committee Chairman and Country Director of GOAL, described NGO Week as an important platform for strengthening collaboration among NGOs, civil society groups, donors, and community stakeholders. He said sustainable progress can only be achieved through coordinated partnerships.
Riak stated that INGOs have been working closely with the Ministry to support interventions in water supply, healthcare, education, and other essential services, in line with national priorities.
In her keynote address, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, called on media institutions to raise public awareness about the significance of NGO Week 2026.
She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to partnering with NGOs to ensure resources are effectively utilized for maximum impact. According to the Minister, NGO operations are aligned with the country’s Mid-Term National Development Plan (2024–2030).
Minister Barlay acknowledged the contributions of both INGOs and NNGOs in sectors including education, health, agriculture, gender equality, environmental protection, human rights, and social justice. She also reiterated the Government’s resolve to strengthen the regulatory framework governing NGOs.
This year’s NGO Week will be celebrated under the theme: “Collaboration, Sustainability, and Local Empowerment.”
The Minister further disclosed that district development plans have been developed nationwide in partnership with NGOs, with plans underway to roll out chiefdom-level planning to ensure grassroots inclusion.
The Ministry expressed confidence that NGO Week 2026 will be successfully implemented and deliver meaningful impact across Sierra Leone.
