Sierra Leone Ranked 9th Best Governed Country in Africa – World Economics Governance Index
The Government of Sierra Leone has announced that the country has been ranked 9th among Africa’s best-governed nations, according to the latest Governance Index published by World Economics.
Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, disclosed on Epic Radio Facebook page the ranking in a public statement, describing it as a significant milestone in the country’s governance reform efforts.
According to the report, Sierra Leone placed ninth on the continent based on a composite assessment of governance performance indicators. The index evaluates countries using key metrics including rule of law, corruption perception, political accountability, press freedom, and the effectiveness of public institutions.

The Governance Index compiles data from international datasets, expert analyses, and governance-related statistics to generate overall scores for countries. Higher scores reflect stronger institutional performance, improved transparency, and greater accountability in public administration. The ranking is intended to provide investors, policymakers, and researchers with an independent measurement of governance standards across countries worldwide.

Sierra Leone’s inclusion among countries traditionally regarded as governance leaders on the continent marks a notable development, particularly as the country continues efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and public sector reforms.
Government officials say the ranking reflects ongoing institutional reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and service delivery. The announcement comes amid continued debates domestically over constitutional amendments, anti-corruption measures, and public sector performance.

The World Economics Governance Index serves as a benchmarking tool for comparing governance standards globally. Analysts note that while such indices provide useful comparative data, governance performance remains subject to ongoing evaluation as countries implement reforms and respond to emerging political and economic challenges.
