Duma Boko Sworn in as Botswana President
Thousands gathered in Gaborone on Friday to witness Duma Boko’s swearing-in as Botswana’s new president, marking the end of the former ruling party’s 58-year reign. Boko’s Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), a coalition of the Botswana National Front and Alliance for Progressives, secured 36 parliamentary seats, ousting former president Mokgweetsi Masisi.
In his inaugural speech, Boko called for national unity and respect for his predecessor, who gracefully conceded power. He described the transition as a “historic moment” and expressed gratitude to citizens, emphasizing Botswana’s need for cooperation.
During the campaign, Boko’s UDC promised anti-corruption efforts, a minimum wage of 4,000 Pula ($302) monthly, unemployment allowances, and enhanced social benefits for the elderly. Unemployment remains a key issue, reaching 27.6% in 2024, and economic challenges persist as diamond revenues, Botswana’s main export, face global market pressures.
The inauguration was attended by notable figures, including former president Ian Khama, South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, and EFF leader Julius Malema.
