Ex-Finance Minister Threatened with Remand If She Misses Next Court Hearing
Former Finance Minister Patricia Laverly has been warned she will face remand if she fails to attend her next court session on December 4, 2024. Magistrate Santigie Bangura, presiding at Pademba Road Court No.2, issued the warning after Laverly missed several hearings, citing health issues.
Laverly faces charges of grievous bodily harm and assault stemming from an alleged altercation on November 12, 2024, at State House in Freetown, where she is accused of attacking Nabella Farida Tunis. Her lawyer, Jenkins Johnson, informed the court that Laverly remains hospitalized in Choithram Hospital’s ICU following a heart attack and requested the court verify her condition.
Prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay challenged the defense’s claims, arguing Laverly’s ongoing absence was unjustified and requested a bench warrant for her arrest if she failed to appear. Magistrate Bangura underscored the need for justice, warning that Laverly’s sureties would also face consequences if she remained absent.
The court has adjourned the matter to December 4, emphasizing Laverly’s appearance as essential to advancing the case.
