Guterres Sets Agenda for Future Summit at UNGA
The United Nations is set to host the Summit of the Future in New York this week. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the need to reform the UN Security Council, highlighting that the current structure reflects issues from 80 years ago. “We can’t build a future fit for our grandchildren with systems designed for our grandparents,” Guterres stated. He called for a redistribution of power among the P5 members and a more inclusive approach to global governance.
Guterres urged member states to show a spirit of compromise and unity during the summit, saying, “The world is watching. It’s time to prove what we can achieve when we work together.” He expressed hope that the summit would generate actionable commitments to address contemporary global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and conflict resolution. The summit aims to set a vision for the future, promoting multilateralism and stronger international cooperation.
