Human Trafficking in Sierra Leone: Challenges and Efforts

Human trafficking remains a serious issue in Sierra Leone, often involving the exploitation of children and women for forced labor, domestic servitude, and sexual exploitation. Contributing factors include widespread poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and the aftermath of the civil war, which has left many vulnerable.
Efforts to combat human trafficking in Sierra Leone include government initiatives, international aid, and advocacy by non-governmental organizations. However, enforcement, awareness, and support for victims remain significant challenges. A comprehensive approach involving prevention, protection, and prosecution is essential to address this issue effectively.
2023 Trafficking in Persons Report: Sierra Leone (Tier 2)
The Government of Sierra Leone does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so. Compared to the previous reporting period, the government demonstrated increased efforts, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These efforts included prosecuting suspected traffickers, passing and enacting the Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act of 2022, and supporting the repatriation of Sierra Leonean victims abroad. However, the government fell short in several key areas, including convicting fewer traffickers and identifying fewer victims. Victim services remain inadequate, and the government did not provide financial support to civil society organizations offering these services.
In an interview with Epic Radio, John John Whitfield, Media Officer for the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force Secretariat, stated, “Human trafficking is a societal issue that has affected us as a nation.”
Sierra Leone continues to face significant challenges related to human trafficking, including poverty, lack of education, and weak law enforcement. Many individuals, particularly women and children, are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, often being trafficked for forced labor, sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude.
