IGP Sellu Leads Police Act Review Meeting
Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu has emphasized the need to update the Police Act to meet modern policing standards. Speaking at a consultative meeting on October 15, 2024, in Freetown, Sellu noted that the review, initiated in 2014, is now a top priority under his leadership. He highlighted the importance of community engagement in shaping the reforms.
Organized by the Law Reform Commission with support from the UNDP, the meeting aimed to gather input on revising the 60-year-old Police Act. Sellu acknowledged previous attempts by former IGPs to amend the Act and expressed his commitment to succeeding through collaboration.
He outlined his vision to transform the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) from a “force” to a “service,” referencing Ghana’s successful transition over two decades ago. Sellu urged stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the new Police Act, which will focus on community policing and building stronger relationships with the public.
Yada Hashim Williams, Chairman of the Law Reform Commission, emphasized the importance of aligning the Act with human rights standards, including preventing torture and excessive use of force. Alie Sesay from the UNDP encouraged participants to contribute to ensuring the reforms enhance police effectiveness and legitimacy.
