IMF Chief Urges Support to Tackle Global Reserve Inequality

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has raised concerns about global reserve inequality, noting that just five countries hold over half of the world’s reserves, leaving many vulnerable. Speaking at the 2024 IMF Annual Meetings, she stressed that this imbalance reflects wider economic disparities that need immediate attention.

Georgieva highlighted challenges like slow growth, high debt, and the economic fragmentation caused by protectionist policies, forecasting only a modest 3.2% global GDP growth over the next five years. Although inflation is retreating, families worldwide still grapple with high living costs.

To address these issues, Georgieva proposed that IMF member countries focus on rebuilding fiscal buffers, investing in growth reforms, and enhancing global cooperation. The IMF’s latest achievements include strengthening the Fund’s financial position and increasing support for low-income nations. She also announced the IMF’s newest member, Liechtenstein, bringing the total to 191.

Reflecting on the IMF’s 80-year mission, Georgieva called for continued multilateral cooperation to stabilize the global economy, tackle inequality, and address climate challenges, ensuring a more equitable economic future.
