Justice Komba Kamanda Appointed as Sierra Leone’s New Chief Justice

On December 16, 2024, President Julius Maada Bio appointed Justice Komba Kamanda as the new Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, succeeding Babatunde Edwards, who has been named Ambassador to Ireland.

Justice Kamanda brings extensive legal experience, having served on the Court of Appeal, where he presided over key cases. His leadership is expected to focus on judicial independence, transparency, and accountability amid rising public scrutiny of the judiciary.

Outgoing Chief Justice Edwards, who served from 2019 to 2023, oversaw significant judicial reforms and high-profile cases. His new diplomatic role reflects the government’s continued trust in his service.

Justice Kamanda’s appointment marks a pivotal step in strengthening Sierra Leone’s rule of law and democratic governance.
