Labour Ministry Wraps Up Provincial Talks on Social Protection Bill
The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security (MELSS) has concluded nationwide consultations with stakeholders on the Social Protection Bill, aiming to establish a robust legal framework for social protection in Sierra Leone. The initiative, which has garnered strong support from citizens and social protection actors, included renewed consultations funded by the World Bank to address previous exclusions and ensure comprehensive input.
“Gathering insights and recommendations from all stakeholders is crucial,” said a MELSS spokesperson. “This Bill will protect the social protection sector in Sierra Leone for years to come, and we want to ensure it’s truly inclusive.”
A key feature of the Bill is the creation of a Social Protection Authority, which will oversee the Social Protection Bread Basket, a centralized fund for social protection activities. Implementing agencies can request funding from this pool to support their programs. The Bill has received significant positive feedback, reflecting a strong public desire for a more effective social protection system.
The successful completion of these provincial engagements marks a critical step towards the enactment of this landmark legislation.
