Mercy Ships Opens Advanced Dental Training Center in Guinea
Mercy Ships has inaugurated a cutting-edge Dental Care Training Center at Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry (UGANC) in Guinea, underscoring its commitment to advancing healthcare education across Africa. The center, part of the organization’s Education, Training, and Advocacy (ETA) program, aims to improve dental training in Guinea and West Africa by offering accredited programs and sustainable learning environments.
The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Guinea’s Minister of Higher Education, Alpha Bacar Barry, and Mercy Ships Country Director, Dr. David Ugai. Minister Barry became the first patient to receive a consultation at the center and urged students to capitalize on this opportunity to improve healthcare in the region.
Dr. Ugai and UGANC leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing health education. The partnership between Mercy Ships and UGANC began in 2018 when the Africa Mercy docked in Guinea for a 10-month mission, leading to the development of a fully operational clinic and hands-on training for students. The collaboration has since expanded, incorporating a prosthetics lab, simulation room, and international exchange programs.
The new facility symbolizes hope and progress, aiming to increase the number of trained dentists and improve healthcare outcomes in underserved regions for future generations.
