New SLID Uniforms Show Commitment to National Security
On November 1, 2024, Sierra Leone’s Immigration Department (SLID) unveiled new uniforms at a formal ceremony held at the Freetown City Hall. Chief Immigration Officer Alusine Kanneh stated that the uniforms symbolize the department’s evolution and its commitment to national security.
Speaking to government officials, staff, and media, Kanneh described the uniforms as part of a larger modernization initiative aimed at improving staff morale and reshaping public perception. “Today’s unveiling marks more than just a change in appearance; it signifies a transformation of our identity,” he said, emphasizing the department’s readiness to face modern challenges.
Kanneh also highlighted recent advancements, including administrative reforms for increased transparency and the decentralization of passport processing to three regional offices by November 2024. Plans are in place to extend services to Sierra Leonean embassies in London and Washington, D.C., by early 2025, enhancing convenience and service satisfaction for citizens in remote areas.
Event speakers echoed the significance of the new attire, linking it to integrity, responsibility, and national service. National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker noted the crucial role of the Immigration Department in national security, stating, “The uniform symbolizes our dedication to security and order.”
Kalilu Omarr Bah, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, emphasized that each officer is expected to uphold high standards while wearing the new uniform. Minister of Internal Affairs David T. O Taluva urged officers to act with integrity, reminding them that even a single misstep can impact the department’s reputation.
Osman Bangura from Human Resource Management reiterated the commitment to equipping the workforce and maintaining high standards of professionalism. Tamba Lamina, Minister of Local Administration and Community Affairs, called on officers to wear their uniforms with dignity, highlighting their role in reflecting the institution’s values.
Immigration officers expressed pride in their new uniforms, with officer Mohamed Kamara noting, “Wearing this uniform reminds me every day of my role in securing our country and representing our values.”
The ceremony concluded with a demonstration of the uniforms’ functionality, showcasing their durability and design tailored to Sierra Leone’s climate and work environments.
