North Korea Destroys Roads Near Border with South, and Cuts Ties
Today, North Korea has detonated explosives on two major roads connecting to South Korea, following a warning to sever ties completely. The Gyeongui line on the West coast and the Donghae line on the East coast were targeted around noon local time, as reported by South Korean authorities.
Although the roads had been unused for years, their destruction symbolizes escalating tensions between the two nations. Video footage from the South Korean Defense Ministry captured the explosions and subsequent heavy machinery activity near the military demarcation line.
In response, South Korea’s military opened fire in the area south of the line and is closely monitoring North Korean movements, maintaining a high state of readiness in coordination with the US. The South Korean military had anticipated the explosions, having detected preparations for the demolition earlier in the week.
These events follow North Korea’s accusations against South Korea for flying propaganda drones over Pyongyang, along with threats of retaliation. In a significant shift, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that the regime would no longer pursue peaceful reunification, referring to relations with the South as those between “two hostile countries at war.”
The North Korean military’s declaration on October 9 warned of completely cutting remaining roads and railways to the South, citing an “acute military situation.” The statement referenced ongoing military exercises in South Korea and the presence of US strategic assets in the region.
Since January, North Korea has reinforced its border defenses, heightening tensions with the South. Recent fiery rhetoric from both leaders has raised concerns, with Kim threatening nuclear retaliation against the South if attacked.
Experts suggest that North Korea’s actions may be an attempt by Kim to divert attention from internal economic issues and justify military spending.
