Over 200 Killed in Myanmar Floods and Mudslides
The death toll from Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar has risen to over 220, with nearly 80 people still missing, according to the military government. The storm, which hit northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar in early September, has claimed over 500 lives across the region.
In Myanmar, the storm triggered severe floods and mudslides, destroying entire villages and leaving 226 dead. The UN reports that over half a million people are in urgent need of food, water, shelter, and clothing, with more than 630,000 affected by the floods across nine states and regions, including the capital Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Bago.
The ongoing civil war, which began in 2021 after the military ousted the elected government, has worsened the situation. Poor communication in remote areas and the lack of access to rebel-controlled regions like Shan State have delayed casualty reports. In Shan, over 100 bodies have been recovered from mudslides, with more than 200 still missing.
Aid efforts are severely hampered by damaged infrastructure, blocked roads, and restricted access to rebel-controlled areas. India is the only neighboring country to respond to Myanmar’s appeal for help, sending food, clothes, and medicine.
Typhoon Yagi also caused significant destruction in Vietnam, where 292 people have died and 230,000 homes have been damaged, along with extensive crop losses and industrial damage. Thailand and Laos also reported fatalities.
