By Reginald Brian Ojukutu Sawyerr
In a bold move to promote wellness and environmental awareness through sport, Sierra Leone Aquatics is set to host the 2nd Edition of the National Open Water Swimming Championships under the inspiring theme: “Physical, Mental & Ocean Health Awareness.”
The championships will take place on Saturday, 21st June 2025, at the *National Tourist Board View, Lumley Beach. Swimmers from across the country—including top athletes and rising talents—will compete in 1KM, 3KM, and 5KM open water races. This event will not only showcase athletic endurance but also promote a deeper commitment to physical wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
Speaking on the significance of the event, the President of Sierra Leone Aquatics noted,
“We are using swimming as a platform to highlight the importance of physical fitness, mental health, and ocean preservation. This is more than a competition—it’s a call to protect our bodies and our beaches.”
The initiative aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and protect marine life—particularly important for coastal nations like Sierra Leone. The event will also include beach clean-up campaigns, mental health awareness sessions, and interactive fitness activities to engage the wider public.
In collaboration with local communities, youth organizations, and key stakeholders, the championships are expected to draw a diverse and enthusiastic audience.
While prizes will be awarded to top-performing swimmers, the ultimate reward, organizers emphasize, is increased awareness of how aquatic sports can inspire a healthier, more environmentally conscious society.
As Sierra Leone continues to advance sports for development, the National Open Water Swimming Championships stands as a powerful symbol of how athleticism, advocacy, and action can work together—for a stronger body, sharper mind, and cleaner ocean.
