Sierra Leone Launches Positive Parenting Education Program
The Ministry of Social Welfare, with support from UNICEF, has introduced the Positive Parenting Education Program (PPEP), also known as Gud Kombra Na Gladi. Officially launched on November 15, 2024, at New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, the initiative aims to foster nurturing, violence-free homes across the nation.
The program, covering 10 districts, equips parents and caregivers with tools to reduce harsh parenting, prevent teenage pregnancies, and promote girls’ empowerment through life-skills training. Chief Director Mariatu Bangura highlighted the program’s focus on transforming environments for children and adolescents into safe, supportive spaces.
Personal stories shared during the launch demonstrated the program’s impact on improving family relationships. Key objectives include promoting non-violent discipline, enhancing communication, and reducing abuse. Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Kaminty, emphasized positive parenting as essential for children’s confidence, decision-making, and overall potential.
UNICEF Deputy Country Representative Liv Elin Indreiten celebrated the program’s milestone, noting its potential to reduce violence and strengthen families. A UNICEF study revealed that 87% of Sierra Leonean children experience violence at home, underscoring the urgent need for change.
By fostering collaboration between the government, UNICEF, and communities, the PPEP aims to empower families, break cycles of violence, and ensure that children grow up in environments conducive to their growth and development.
