Sierra Leone President Maada Bio Urges Unity, Empathy at New Year Mass in Tihun
President Julius Maada Bio on Wednesday attended New Year’s Day Mass at St Joseph Catholic Church in Tihun, where he called on Sierra Leoneans to uphold unity, empathy, and love as the nation enters a new year.
The Mass coincided with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, celebrated under the theme “The Motherhood of Mary.” Prayers were offered for President Bio and his family, the First Lady, the government, and for peace and development across Sierra Leone.
In his homily, Acting Parish Priest Rev. Fr Patrick Vagahun reminded congregants that God, who once spoke through prophets, now speaks through His Son, urging believers to reflect deeply on God’s word, following the example of Mary. Readings from the Books of Numbers, Galatians, and Luke focused on God’s blessing, humanity’s adoption as children of God, and the birth and naming of Jesus.
Addressing worshippers, President Bio thanked God for life and for the opportunity to begin a new year with faith and optimism. He urged citizens to remain grateful and compassionate, emphasizing that faith continues to unite people despite global challenges.
Describing the occasion as significant for marking both the start of the year and the Feast of Mary, Mother of God, the President called for strengthened national unity and empathy, and encouraged Sierra Leoneans to consolidate the peace and progress achieved over the years as the country looks toward a more prosperous future.
