UK Urges UN Action, Increases Sudan Aid
The UK plans to table a resolution at the UN Security Council on Monday, November 18, calling for an end to Sudan’s conflict and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy, as council president, will co-lead the vote with Sierra Leone, urging civilian protection in Sudan. He is expected to announce a doubling of UK aid to £226 million ($285 million), stating, “The UK will never let Sudan be forgotten.”
The ongoing power struggle between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces has claimed thousands of lives since April 2023, creating the world’s largest displacement crisis.
Lammy will also address other global issues, condemning Israel’s aid restrictions in Gaza, urging a ceasefire, and supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
