WAFU Delegation Arrives in Sierra Leone
Ahead of the West Africa Zone A tournament, the WAFU Zone-A Executive Director, Mapathe Gaye from Senegal, and Finance Officer Balamin Ceesay from The Gambia arrived in Sierra Leone on Monday, June 24th, to conduct a thorough inspection of facilities. They were warmly received by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) team at the Home Suites Hotel in Freetown. The SLFA Acting General Secretary, Mohamed Benson Bawoh, along with Head of Finance Ibrahim Bah, Director of Competitions Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, and other members of the Local Organizing Committee, officially welcomed the delegates. Discussions promptly began to ensure the smooth organization of the upcoming tournament.
Mohamed Benson Bawoh, expressing optimism, stated, “We are committed to hosting a remarkable tournament that will not only showcase the talent of our women footballers but also highlight Sierra Leone’s capacity to host significant regional sporting events.”
Sierra Leone is set to host the CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers from August 2nd to 11th at the Southern Arena. This marks the first time Sierra Leone will host such a tournament, bringing together over 100 players from women’s division champions of WAFU A member associations with active women’s division leagues. The winners of this tournament will secure a spot in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament.
The inspection of facilities is a crucial step in ensuring all venues and amenities meet the high standards required for an international competition of this caliber. The tournament promises to be a significant occasion, uniting the best female football clubs from the region for a week of competitive and entertaining matches.
