China Donates $100,000 in School Materials to Boost Sierra Leone’s Education Sector

The Government of China has donated school materials worth $100,000 (over 2.3 billion old leones) to Sierra Leone, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and supporting the country’s education sector.

The donation includes school furniture, blackboards, globes, footballs, solar-powered devices, and firefighting equipment. The items will be distributed to 21 educational institutions across eight districts: Freetown, Bonthe, Kabala, Kono, Falaba, Port Loko, Tonkolili, and Kambia.

The handover ceremony was held at the Office of the Vice President in Freetown. Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, said the donation reflects ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries.

“Guided by the consensus of President Xi Jinping and President Julius Maada Bio, China stands ready to further expand and deepen practical cooperation in various fields with Sierra Leone,” Ambassador Wang said.

Receiving the donation, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh thanked the Chinese government for its continued support, calling the gesture a timely contribution to the country’s education priorities.

“This donation will directly benefit our schools and students, and we appreciate China’s long-standing partnership,” Dr. Jalloh said. “We look forward to increased cooperation, especially from Jiangxi Province, in education, culture, and municipal development.”

The donation follows a visit by Jiangxi Province Vice Governor Sun Hongshan to Sierra Leone in May 2024, during which both sides discussed expanding collaboration and encouraging Chinese investment in key sectors of Sierra Leone’s economy.
