Embrace Renewable Energy to Solve Energy Problems

During the Presidential town hall meeting organized by the Ministry of Information and Civil Education at the Bintumani International Conference Center on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, His Excellency Rtd. Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio expressed deep concerns about the numerous challenges plaguing the energy sector, despite significant investments. The President emphasised the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), including a complete overhaul of its revenue collection methods. Currently, the demand for energy far exceeds the supply, exacerbating the sector’s problems.
Experts have noted that the country’s energy sources are not environmentally sustainable. The situation is further complicated by the rampant illegal abstraction of electricity by consumers, often in collusion with some energy sector players. Ministries, Departments, and Agencies owe EDSA billions of Leones in arrears, adding to the financial strain on the authority.
In light of these challenges, there is an urgent call for the country to shift rapidly towards renewable energy. Renewable energy is derived from natural sources that replenish at a faster rate than they are consumed. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 underscores the global need to transition fully to renewable energy by 2030.
A UN report warns that to limit global warming to 1.5°C, the world requires three times more renewable energy capacity. Solar energy, in particular, is not only cheap and reliable but also reduces the immense environmental stress caused by human activities. With the anticipated $400 million Millennium Compact on the horizon, it is crucial that these funds be directed towards clean energy initiatives. This is a pivotal moment to adopt the right energy strategies, ensuring a sustainable and pollutant-free environment for future generations.
