Ghana’s NDC Protests Alleged Voter Roll Issues
Ghana’s largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), staged nationwide protests on Tuesday, demanding an audit of the voter roll ahead of December’s general election. The demonstrations, which took place in all 16 regional capitals, including Accra, saw massive turnout from NDC supporters.
NDC leaders, including Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Chairman Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, criticized the electoral commission, accusing them of hiding irregularities, such as unauthorized transfers and deletions of voter names. The NDC is calling for an independent audit facilitated by the UNDP.
The electoral commission dismissed the call for a forensic audit as “misguided.” Asiedu-Nketiah urged for urgent action to prevent any threats to Ghana’s democratic process, highlighting the need for transparency in the upcoming elections.
The protests concluded with a petition to Parliament and the Electoral Commission, demanding a bipartisan investigation and publication of audit results. The December election will see Former President John Dramani Mahama of the NDC challenge Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party.
