UN Urges End to Sudan Violence
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council addressed Sudan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, now exacerbated by over 16 months of conflict.
UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, highlighted the recent surge in violence in El Fasher amid a prolonged siege by the Rapid Support Forces. She condemned the severe suffering of civilians, including famine conditions in Zamzam camp.
Since the conflict erupted in April last year between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan has descended into chaos. The violence has devastated Khartoum and other cities, crippling infrastructure and healthcare services. Many hospitals have closed, and the country, already reeling from civil war and climate change, faces a dire humanitarian crisis. The 2024 UN Humanitarian Needs Overview for South Sudan estimates that 9 million people, or 73% of the population, will need aid in 2024.
