Heavy Rains Expected in Sierra Leone: Meteorological Agency

Gabriel Kpaka, Deputy Director General of the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency, has issued a warning that Sierra Leone will face significantly heavier rainfall in August and September compared to July.
Kpaka highlighted that the July-August-September (JAS) period will bring substantial rain, with August anticipated to be particularly wet. “July is just the beginning with moderate rainfall. However, the forecast indicates that August will experience a much heavier downpour,” he stated.
The Meteorological Agency is working with the disaster management agency and other relevant bodies to ensure preparedness for these conditions. Kpaka warned of the potential for severe flooding this year based on current forecasts.
In light of these warnings, the Meteorological Agency has issued flood alerts, effective since 9 a.m. yesterday and continuing through 10 a.m. today. Yesterday’s rainfall was described as a “200-millimeter rain,” an exceptionally heavy downpour typically expected over a month but observed in just one day.
Residents are urged to stay informed and prepared for the increased rainfall and potential flooding in the coming months.
