Inmates Break Out of Niger Prison Housing Militants
Niger’s interior ministry has put search units on high alert following a breakout from the high-security Koutoukale prison on Thursday, July 11. The facility, located 50 kilometers northwest of Niamey, houses Islamist militants involved in Niger’s conflicts with groups linked to al-Qaida, Islamic State, and suspected Boko Haram insurgents.
The ministry has not disclosed the number of escaped prisoners or details on how they managed to flee. Attempts to break out of Koutoukale prison were previously thwarted in 2016 and 2019.
In response to the escape, local authorities have implemented an overnight curfew in Tillaberi, the urban commune near the prison. Further information on the incident has not been provided.
Niger and its neighboring countries in the central Sahel region have been grappling with an escalating jihadist threat since 2012, when al-Qaida-linked fighters seized parts of Mali. This ongoing insurgency has resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced over 3 million people, exacerbating humanitarian crises in some of the world’s most impoverished nations.
