Kenya’s President Meets U.S. Secretary Blinken in New York
During a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in New York on Thursday, Kenyan President William Ruto thanked the U.S. for its significant support to Africa, particularly in equipment and assistance. He highlighted the collaboration in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, emphasizing the need for continued partnership to address these issues.
Ruto also discussed his recent visit to Haiti, where he observed notable improvements in infrastructure, including the airport, hospital, and police academy. Despite these advancements, he acknowledged that significant gaps remain, necessitating additional resources.
Attending the UN General Assembly this week, Ruto noted that Kenya was the first country to send forces as part of a U.N. initiative to assist Haiti, which has faced escalating conflict and political instability since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Currently, around 400 Kenyan police are stationed in Haiti, but the U.S. and other nations have expressed concerns that the forces lack the necessary resources to combat gangs that control about 80% of Port-au-Prince.
