Tertiary Education Minister Urges Stronger Governance in Sierra Leone Universities
The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Ramatulai Wurie, has stressed the urgent need to improve governance systems in Sierra Leone’s universities. At a town hall meeting themed “The Cost of Quality Higher Education: A Collective Responsibility,” held on September 26, 2024, at Fourah Bay College, she emphasized the importance of quality management systems in higher education.
The event addressed key areas like sustainable university financing, its impact on students and communities, and universities’ role in delivering quality education. Panelists provided recommendations for university development, while students raised concerns, particularly about extra charges for unused services.
Minister Wurie revealed plans to implement quality management systems and a national research innovation policy. She urged universities to adopt public-private partnerships to enhance faculty skills and called for better financial management and governance structures in the university system. Additionally, she addressed the issue of unreliable internet access and assured that efforts to improve connectivity for students are underway.
The Minister concluded by highlighting the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration among institutions to advance the nation’s higher education system.
