Mauritius Prime Minister Concedes ‘Huge Defeat’ in Election

Mauritius Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth has acknowledged his coalition, L’Alliance Lepep, suffered a “huge defeat” in Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Jugnauth, who was seeking a second term, conceded that the electorate chose rival Navin Ramgoolam’s Alliance of Change coalition. Ramgoolam is poised to become the next leader of the Indian Ocean nation.

The election was marred by a phone-tapping scandal, which led to a brief social media ban. While final results are pending, Ramgoolam’s party is expected to win. Jugnauth wished the country well, emphasizing the need to respect the people’s decision.
