Opposition Leader Tops Ghana’s Presidential Polls
Former president and opposition leader John Dramani Mahama is leading in the latest polls for Ghana’s December presidential elections. Mahama, of the National Democratic Congress, is facing off against Vice-President Muhamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
A total of 13 candidates are contesting to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is stepping down after two terms. Amid Ghana’s severe economic crisis, both Mahama and Bawumia are focusing their campaigns on economic recovery and improving citizens’ lives.
Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, defaulted on much of its $30 billion external debt in 2022 after years of excessive borrowing. No party has ever won more than two consecutive terms in Ghana’s democratic history.
