Nairobi Archdiocese Rejects President Ruto’s Donation
The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi has rejected donations from President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja made during a church service at Soweto Catholic Church on Sunday.
President Ruto’s donations included Sh600,000 for the church choir, Sh2 million for the parish priest’s house, and a promise of an additional Sh3 million, along with a bus for the church in January. Governor Sakaja contributed Sh200,000.
Archbishop Philip Anyolo announced the funds and pledges would be declined in adherence to a policy by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) that bars the Church from accepting political donations. Anyolo emphasized the need for the Church to remain free from political influence, ensuring it serves as a neutral space for spiritual and community growth.
The rejection follows a KCCB statement criticizing the government for failing to fulfill campaign promises and imposing excessive taxes. The bishops also expressed concern over rising insecurity and human rights abuses, urging the government to address these issues.
