NPAA Halts Lake Sophon Mining
The National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) executed a raid on the Lake Sophon Mining area in Koinadugu District, Diang Chiefdom, led by Executive Director Mr. Thomas Faya Kamara, Deputy Mr. Dwight Sheriff, and their team, supported by security forces. This operation aimed to stop illegal mining activities threatening the lake, a vital national protected area. The initiative aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s strong commitment to environmental conservation.
Illegal mining posed severe risks to Lake Sophon, known for its rich biodiversity, including crocodiles, fish, crabs, and other species that attract tourists. The NPAA’s intervention was necessary to protect the environment. During the raid, Mr. Kamara and his team successfully ceased all mining operations around Lake Sophon, in line with President Bio’s environmental conservation policies, which emphasize the protection of natural resources for ecological balance and socio-economic benefits through tourism and sustainable use.
The NPAA’s actions mark a significant step in preserving Sierra Leone’s natural heritage.
