PPRC Grants APC Executive Six-Month Extension Under Political Parties Act

The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has granted a six-month extension to the current National Executive Committee (NEC), National Advisory Committee (NAC), and other elected officials of the All People’s Congress (APC), allowing them to remain in office beyond the expiration of their three-year mandate.
In a directive dated February 13, 2026, the Commission stated that the extension is granted pursuant to Section 39(5) of the Political Parties Act, 2022, which provides for continuity of leadership under specific circumstances.
According to the PPRC, the APC’s executive bodies have activated the relevant legal provision, permitting them to continue administering party affairs for a period not exceeding six months from the date their mandate expires.
The Commission further directed that if the extended period lapses before the party convene its National Delegates’ Conference (NDC), the Interim Elections Management Committee (IEMC) will proceed with the conduct of internal elections.
Additionally, the directive mandates the Leader of the APC in Parliament to nominate five Members of Parliament each representing one of the country’s five regions to oversee the administration of party affairs pending the holding of the NDC.
The decision comes as the APC prepares to conduct lower-level elections ahead of its National Delegates’ Conference, amid internal discussions regarding the eligibility of current executive members to seek re-election once their tenure expires.
The PPRC’s intervention is expected to provide legal clarity and maintain continuity within the main opposition party during the transitional period.
