Sierra Leone Launches Safeguarding Community for Disability Protection
The National Safeguarding Community of Practice (CoP) was officially launched on November 28, 2024, at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, marking a key step toward protecting children, young people, and vulnerable adults in Sierra Leone.
The CoP brings together professionals from various sectors, including I/NGOs, CBOs, OPDs, and government bodies, to foster a unified approach to safeguarding. The platform aims to share knowledge, build capacity, and influence the development of national safeguarding policies.
Tamba Aliyu, Safeguarding Advisor at Sightsavers and CoP Chair, emphasized the initiative’s focus on inclusivity, ensuring dignity and safety for all, especially women and girls. The Minister of Gender, Madam Isata Mahoi, aligned the launch with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, stressing the importance of community-driven solutions to safeguard vulnerable groups.
The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Mohamed Haji-Kella, affirmed the government’s commitment to integrating safeguarding into policy, while Alex Maclean, Development Director at the British High Commission, highlighted the need for comprehensive safeguarding efforts across sectors. Fatmata I. Kargbo of the Children’s Forum Network stressed the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare in the safeguarding policy.
A panel discussion led by Sarah Cundy, Country Director for Concern Worldwide, explored safeguarding’s role in development funding, focusing on capacity building and awareness. The event concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting, signaling a new chapter in Sierra Leone’s safeguarding efforts.
