ChildFund and KOICA Donate Classroom Block to Services School
ChildFund Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), has officially handed over a newly constructed three-classroom block to Services Secondary School in Juba, Freetown. The ceremony, held on November 28, 2024, marked a significant step in supporting the government’s Free Quality Education initiative.
The project also included a solar-powered borehole, 16 VIP latrines, modern furniture, and learning materials, aimed at enhancing the school environment. This effort is part of the Increasing Access to Secondary Education for Out-of-School Girls in the Western Area project, funded by KOICA and ChildFund Korea, which runs from 2023 to 2025 and targets six schools in the region.
Jeremiah Sawyerr, Project Manager at ChildFund Sierra Leone, highlighted that the initiative has re-enrolled 227 girls in accelerated classes and is creating inclusive and safe learning environments.
Principal Madam Georgiana Bangura expressed gratitude for the new facilities, noting the long-standing lack of clean water at the school. “This project has transformed our environment for both students and teachers,” she said.
Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, praised the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and its role in improving access to education for out-of-school girls. He also announced plans to restore Guidance Centers in schools to support students’ holistic development.
The ceremony concluded with the commissioning of the new facilities and a tour, symbolizing a brighter future for education in the community.
