SLP to Revive Informal Dispute Resolution in 2025-2029 Plan
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is set to reintroduce an informal resolution mechanism for minor offences as part of its 2025-2029 Strategic Development Plan. Announced by Inspector General William Fayia Sellu during a stakeholders’ engagement on November 29, 2024, the initiative aims to resolve minor crimes outside of court, focusing on community service instead of imprisonment.
“This approach conserves government resources and builds community trust,” IG Sellu stated at the event held at the Foreign Service Academy in Freetown. The plan emphasizes stronger public-police relations, accountability, and effective use of resources.
Key highlights include community-level resolutions for minor offences and plans for new police facilities at York. The SLP also seeks funding and partnerships, with support pledged by stakeholders like the UNDP to aid in capacity-building and institutional reforms.
The plan aims to rebuild trust, streamline operations, and ensure a more accountable police force over the next five years.
