Sierra Leone Police Crack Down on Child Trafficking
On June 28, 2024, the Sierra Leone Police’s Community Relations Department (CRD-PHQ) convened a significant meeting at the CDIID Disciplinary Court, located at the Police Headquarters on George Street, Freetown. This gathering was directed by Inspector General of Police Mr. William Fayia Sellu, facilitated through the Director of Gender and Community Affairs.
The primary purpose of the meeting was to inform members of the Local Policing Partnership Board (LPPB), Community Relations Officers/Coordinators, and Police Artistes about the ongoing efforts to combat the rising issue of child trafficking in Sierra Leone. Despite the implementation of the Child Trafficking Act 2022 and ongoing arrests of offenders, child trafficking continues to be a persistent problem in the country.
Superintendent Conteh emphasized the importance of identifying key elements in trafficking cases: confirming the act, recognizing the method used by the perpetrator, and understanding the purpose, whether it be sexual exploitation or forced labor. Representatives from the LPPB and various divisions in the Western Area participated in discussions on strategies to tackle child trafficking, unanimously agreeing that education is a critical component.
Additionally, Superintendent Conteh announced plans to engage Police Artistes in creating songs aimed at raising awareness about child trafficking and its prevention methods. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to educate the public and strengthen community efforts in the fight against child trafficking.
