U.S. Ambassador Meets Parliament Speaker
On Monday, June 24, 2024, U.S. Ambassador Bryan David Hunt visited Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, who serves as the Speaker of Sierra Leone’s Sixth Parliament. Ambassador Hunt extended congratulations to Speaker Thomas for his historic election as the youngest Speaker in the country’s parliamentary history.
During the courtesy call, Ambassador Hunt expressed keen interest in Idris Elba’s development project for Bonthe Island, highlighting its potential to enhance Sierra Leone’s international visibility. Despite the rainy season preventing his visit to the island, Ambassador Hunt assured Speaker Thomas of his support for the project, which aims to provide reliable electricity and boost the local economy.
In response, Speaker Thomas thanked Ambassador Hunt for his visit and affirmed the Parliament’s commitment to enacting progressive legislation under his leadership. He emphasized the economic benefits of the Bonthe project and informed Ambassador Hunt that it had received Cabinet approval and would soon be presented for parliamentary ratification. Speaker Thomas stressed the project’s role in advancing regional development goals.
The meeting concluded with Ambassador Hunt expressing gratitude to Speaker Thomas for hosting him and reaffirming their mutual dedication to collaborating closely for the development of Sierra Leone.
