UN Road Safety Envoy Visits President Bio
Ambassador Jean Todt, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Road Safety, recently visited Sierra Leone where he met with President Dr. Julius Maada Bio to discuss critical road safety initiatives. During his courtesy call, Ambassador Todt updated President Bio on his ongoing efforts globally and emphasized the urgent need for collaboration to tackle the alarming rate of road accidents.
Introducing Ambassador Todt, First Lady Fatima Maada Bio highlighted his mission to engage various stakeholders, including youth, on the importance of road safety in Sierra Leone. She recalled her own appointment as the champion of road safety during a visit to Turkey, where she recommended Ambassador Todt’s visit to Sierra Leone to further discussions on this crucial issue.
Ambassador Todt expressed gratitude for the warm reception and shared concerning statistics: annually, approximately 1.2 million people lose their lives due to road accidents, with millions more sustaining non-fatal injuries. He stressed that nearly all accidents are preventable through measures such as respecting speed limits, avoiding alcohol while driving, and refraining from using phones behind the wheel.
Highlighting Africa’s vulnerability to road accidents, Ambassador Todt underscored the importance of committed leadership in prioritizing road safety on the international agenda. He commended the First Lady’s advocacy efforts and called on President Bio and other African leaders to amplify discussions on road safety across all platforms.
President Julius Maada Bio welcomed Ambassador Todt’s visit, acknowledging the critical timing and the significance of their discussions. He expressed optimism that Ambassador Todt’s engagement with stakeholders and the public would enhance awareness and foster collective action on road safety issues in Sierra Leone and beyond.
President Bio emphasized the vulnerability of pedestrians and underscored the need for concerted efforts to address reckless driving, negligence, and distractions such as phone use while driving. He pledged to collaborate with fellow African heads of state to elevate road safety discussions within regional bodies like ECOWAS and the African Union.
