West African Pharmacists Honour President Bio with Honorary Fellowship for Leadership in Human Capital Development
President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, in recognition of his transformative leadership and significant contributions to human capital development in the country.
The award was presented during the College’s 37th Annual General Meeting held in Freetown, where the Council highlighted President Bio’s strategic interventions in healthcare, education, and public welfare. A key factor cited was the government’s declaration of the Kush drug crisis as a Public Health Emergency in 2024—a decision the Council described as a bold and necessary step in safeguarding public health.
“This honour is well deserved,” said Alhaji Mutada Sesay, President of the College. “It is a recognition not only of President Bio’s achievements but also an inspiration for others in the region to follow his example.”
Secretary-General of the College, Professor Ibrahim Oreagba, noted that the Honorary Fellowship is a rare distinction, reserved for global leaders whose policies and governance have made lasting impacts on public health and human development.
In his acceptance speech, President Bio expressed appreciation for the recognition, stating it strengthens his government’s resolve to improve the lives of Sierra Leoneans.
“This honour places a moral obligation on me to do even more,” he said. “Our commitment to free healthcare, quality education, and food security remains firm, as these are interconnected pillars of sustainable national development.”
The West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists is a regional professional body representing pharmacists from across the continent. Its annual general meeting provides a platform to assess progress in healthcare across member states and to honour individuals whose efforts have advanced public welfare.
President Bio is the first Sierra Leonean Head of State to receive this distinction.
