Attorney General, Justice Ministry Push for Faster Prosecution of Sexual and Drug-Related Crimes
In a high-level meeting with key police units, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay Esq., alongside Deputy Minister of Justice Madam Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh, laid out new strategies aimed at improving the investigation and prosecution of sexual and drug-related crimes.
The meeting, held this week in Freetown, focused on tackling systemic delays in the legal process, strengthening internal law enforcement mechanisms, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders, including the Sierra Leone Police and other justice sector agencies.
Attorney General Sesay reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering swift justice and protecting victims, stating, “The fight against sexual and drug-related crimes is a shared responsibility. Our commitment to strengthening the justice system is unwavering, and we will continue to work together with all stakeholders to ensure swift justice, protect victims, and hold perpetrators accountable.”
Deputy Minister Saccoh also emphasized the importance of a victim-centered approach. “The justice system is not just about law enforcement; it’s about ensuring that every victim is heard, supported, and protected,” she said. “Together, we will strengthen our systems, reduce delays, and ensure that those responsible for these heinous crimes are held accountable.”
The Ministry of Justice pledged continued collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police and relevant institutions to implement more effective procedures, provide better victim support services, and increase accountability across the justice chain.
The initiative marks a renewed push by the government to address rising concerns over the handling of sexual and drug-related crimes and to rebuild public confidence in the justice system.
