286 Hajj Pilgrims Test Negative for COVID-19

The National Public Health Agency of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Social Welfare held an emergency press conference on July 4, 2024. The conference was directed at the returning Hajj pilgrims.
Dr. Mohammed A. Vandi, Deputy Executive Director of the National Public Health Agency, stated, “Each pilgrim will undergo a single swab test, which will be for COVID-19 and fourteen other diseases. The process is designed not to take more than 5 minutes.” He also pointed out that while COVID-19 is no longer an international health crisis, it remains a national concern.
In an interview with Epic Radio, the Health Education Manager, Mr. Aron Thomas, discussed the measures taken for the return of the 2024 pilgrims. “We took a very proactive measure to make sure every pilgrim was vaccinated, and a medical team also accompanied the pilgrims,” he said.
He also assured citizens that the Ministry of Health and the Public Health Agency have put in place plans for laboratory scientists and risk communication officers, who will be ready for any eventuality as COVID-19 is a national concern.
“Should any of them show any symptoms, they won’t be kept in an isolation unit because COVID is not of international concern but of national concern,” he added.
The conference highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its citizens, especially in light of recent global health trends. The swift and comprehensive testing protocol for returning pilgrims underscores the proactive stance taken by the National Public Health Agency and the Ministry of Social Welfare.
