750 Sierra Leoneans Stranded in Niger
Around 750 Sierra Leoneans, including women and children, are stranded at an International Organization for Migration (IOM) camp in Agadez, Niger. Despite being processed and vetted by IOM officials, their repatriation to Sierra Leone is on hold due to the lack of authorization from the Sierra Leonean government.
Musa Alie Sesay, the group’s spokesperson, stated that while IOM has completed the necessary procedures for their return, the delay is caused by the Sierra Leonean authorities not providing the required approval for IOM officials in Niamey to facilitate their departure.
These individuals, who initially sought better opportunities abroad, faced difficulties in Libya, Morocco, and Algeria before being sent back to Niger. They are now appealing to the Sierra Leonean government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Freetown, to expedite their return process.
Their situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by migrants and underscores the need for swift diplomatic action to ensure their safe repatriation.
