Bai Mahmoud Faces Separate Treason Trial
Justice Kumba Kamanda of the High Court of Freetown has granted former All People’s Congress (APC) Youth Minister Bai Mahmoud Bangura a separate trial in the ongoing Treason Trial due to health reasons. Bangura, whose health issues have affected his regular court attendance, will commence his separate trial on July 10th, 2024.
The decision to grant separate proceedings came after concerns were raised about Bangura’s deteriorating health causing delays in the trial involving twelve defendants. State prosecutor Ahmed Bockarie argued for the separate trial, citing significant delays caused by Bangura’s late arrivals due to health issues, which have stalled proceedings over the last three court sessions.
Previously, Justice Kamanda had ruled on a no-case submission by Bangura’s defense counsel, Ady Macauley, who argued that his client had no connection to the charges against him. Despite defense arguments, the prosecution presented evidence linking Bangura to the alleged coup attempt, including his association with Mohamed Jalloh, found at Bangura’s residence with military gear.
While acknowledging insufficient evidence directly linking Bangura to the coup attempt, Justice Kamanda ruled that the prosecution had presented enough grounds for Bangura to stand trial on all charges. Consequently, Bangura opted to testify under oath and call a defense witness.
The trial has adjourned to July 10th, 2024, to facilitate Bangura’s separate proceedings as he prepares to defend himself against the charges.
