Ivory Coast Withdraws as Host of U20 Africa Cup of Nations

Ivory Coast has officially withdrawn from hosting the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), just months before the tournament was set to begin. The decision, announced this afternoon by the Ivorian government, cites unforeseen circumstances, sparking concerns over the country’s capability to host international sporting events.
Government officials pointed to security challenges, logistical difficulties, and unfinished venue preparations as key reasons for the withdrawal. In a statement, the Minister of Sports expressed regret but emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of players, officials, and spectators.
“This is a difficult but necessary decision, and we deeply regret its impact on football fans in Ivory Coast and across the continent,” the Minister said. “We remain committed to African football and will continue working with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on alternative solutions.”
CAF has yet to issue an official response, but sources indicate that an emergency meeting will be convened to determine the tournament’s future. The U20 AFCON serves as a qualification pathway for the FIFA U20 World Cup, making the decision a critical blow to teams that had already begun preparations.
It remains unclear whether CAF will seek a replacement host or reschedule the tournament. With only a month until kickoff, urgent action is needed to ensure the competition proceeds as planned.
