The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has received 45 motorbikes and 16 vehicles to strengthen its nationwide operations, particularly in rural communities.

The equipment was provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations under the Pandemic Fund for a Resilient World Project, funded by the European Union.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, FAO Country Representative Saced A. Bancie described the delivery as a major milestone in efforts to improve Sierra Leone’s agricultural and food systems. He said the support underscores strong collaboration between partners and the government in safeguarding food security and public health.

Bancie noted that effective implementation of agricultural programmes—particularly pest surveillance and emergency preparedness—requires reliable mobility. He said the new vehicles and motorbikes will enable faster monitoring of field activities and more efficient response to emerging threats.

He urged the ministry to ensure proper maintenance of the equipment to maximize its impact.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Henry Musa Kpaka, welcomed the support, describing it as a significant boost to the ministry’s capacity.

He acknowledged longstanding mobility challenges that have affected timely responses to disease outbreaks in both crops and livestock. According to him, the new fleet will improve preparedness and response efforts across the country.

Kpaka said the project will benefit most districts and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to proper use and maintenance of the equipment.

The intervention is expected to enhance field operations, improve outreach to farmers, and strengthen service delivery in Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector.
