Sierra Leone Army to Join 2nd African Military Games
The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) is gearing up to participate in the Second Edition of the African Military Games, scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Out of the 42 countries expected to participate in the 2nd edition of the African Military Games in Abuja 2024, 27 have already indicated their interest in participating in all the sporting activities at the forthcoming games in November 2024. The African Military Games is an avenue for African military athletes to come together, fostering historical collaborative efforts and working relationships built and enjoyed over the years. The African Military Games is a multi-sport event that was held just once, in 2002.
The first-ever African Military Games, supported by the Conseil Internationale du Sport Militaire (CISM), were held in April 2002 in Nairobi, Kenya. Tunisia was asked to host the 2006 African Military Games, but it never took place.
Air Vice Marshal Marquiz of the Nigerian Army disclosed that the theme for the 2nd African Military Games Abuja 2024 is “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa Through Sports,” scheduled to be held between November 6th to 15th, 2024. According to the Director, 27 out of the 42 expected countries have already shown interest in participating in all the sporting activities at the forthcoming games.
Meanwhile, RSLAF held a strategic meeting with the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority on an earlier commitment. In the follow-up engagement, the head of the military delegation, Major Kanu, met with the NSA to ensure their participation in the games and discuss the need for technical assistance.
The 2nd African Military Games Abuja 2024 is expected to feature 19 sporting events, including football, basketball, tennis, badminton, chess, taekwondo, and many more.
