By Osman Marrah

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has engaged with executives from Elcome International LLC to discuss expanding internet access and advocating for social media monetization in the country.

The meeting is part of the government’s broader agenda to enhance digital transformation and connectivity for its citizens.

Dr. Sengeh emphasized the necessity of integrating Sierra Leone into global social media monetization programs, stating that while the country has existing platforms for mobile money and electronic payments, content creators are yet to benefit financially. He urged major social media companies to include Sierra Leone in their revenue-sharing models to empower local users.

“Our people actively create and share content but do not receive financial compensation. President Julius Maada Bio has prioritized both improving connectivity and ensuring that content creators can monetize their work. If they earn from their content, they can afford better internet access, creating a sustainable ecosystem,” Dr. Sengeh stated.

Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, Ms. Salima Bah, reiterated the economic benefits of social media monetization, citing job creation and skill development for young people. She announced plans for further discussions with key social media companies to advocate for these changes.

Elcome International’s Managing Director, Jimmy Grewal, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in remote areas. He highlighted Elcome’s experience in global technology solutions and its interest in supporting Sierra Leone’s digital growth.

Headquartered in Dubai, Elcome International LLC has been a leading technology solutions provider for over five decades. The company is exploring investment opportunities in Sierra Leone’s technology sector to advance the nation’s digital infrastructure.
